I'm applying for a position as a Therapeutic Staff Support at Family Behavioral Resources. Its a family focused therapy center. I will work with autistic kids.

TYPES OF QUESTIONS

Open-ended Questions
- Used by interviewers when they expect more than a yes or no answer. Some typical open questions are: "What can you tell me about yourself?", "Why are you interested in the posted position?" or "What are your most remarkable skills?".

The best way to answer these questions is by doing the right research before going to the interview (check your own resume and the organization website) and by making a list of possible open-ended questions so you can rehearsal your answers before the interview.

Closed-ended Questions
– Used by interviewers when they need to know a specific piece of information (years of experience, technical knowledge, etc.). These questions require a brief and solid answer.

The best way to deal with these questions is by reviewing and making sure you don't have any doubts about your background and CV details. If the question requires a yes/no answer then always try to add a brief piece of valuable information to the answer. For example: "Are you experienced teaching children?" – "Yes. I have 4 years of experience and I think they have been really rewarding".

Hypothetical Questions
– Used by interviewers to assess your problem-solving skills and to make sure you do have enough experience in the field to be able to face day-to-day problems. Of course, reply speed is also assessed.

The best way to face these questions is by having all the required information so you do not give plain, meaningless answers. The best way to gather info is by asking follow-up questions before answering.

Leading Questions
– These questions are assumptive ("So, you have a lot of experience in the Customer Service Area, don´t you?). The idea of leading questions is to get a specific response from the interviewee ("yes, as you can see in my CV, I worked as a receptionist for 7 years and…").

The only way to answer these questions is by not being caught off your guard. That is: Listen carefully and process questions before you answer them. The interviewer may be asking a leading question with a negative emphasis ("it must have been really difficult to get along with your boss as a salesman"). Always go for positive answers.

Multi-Barreled Questions
– They check your reasoning skills. These questions are linked in such way that suddenly what seems to be one question are actually two or three questions about the same topic.

First of all, remember that they are checking your reasoning skills so do not give an answer unless you truly understand the questions. Do not fear to ask the interviewer to either repeat or rephrase his/her question.

Behavioral Questions
– Used by interviewers to check the behavior of candidates. This type of question states that the best way to know what a candidate will do is by knowing what he/she did in a similar situation in the past.

It is important to be completely honest when asked a question about a past experience, interviewers will ask for more and more details and it would be impossible to keep a lie going on. The best way to prepare yourself for these questions is by doing all possible research: What the company wants and what skills are required for the position.     Job Interview Questions: Should i be up front about time off in a job interview?

    I've got a couple job interviews in the next couple of days. They are both arts supply related retail positions. Both of them start as part time. Should I be up front about pre-made vacation plans? I have a big family reunion coming up in July and I will need to be out of town for a week. I'm not sure whether or not to say it in the interview.

    • Oh absolutely be honest. It would be much worse to get hired and then surprise them. Be up front and tell them exactly how long you will be gone. If you don't get the job because of it, you would have been fired from anyway when you told them you needed a week off.

      You should be able to figure out how to fit that into your schedule with other co-workers.

      Anyway - at least on the first interview, don't bring up anything potentially negative to have them skip you as a potential employee.

    • Yes, be up front about your time off. You have a right to have a life outside of work and I am sure they will understand especially if plans were made way before you started working there.

    • I think because it's out a couple of months, I don't think you need to mention it unless they ask. But if they do ask if you have any vacation planned then yes, be honest. Also, if they do NOT ask then you could mention it to them after working for a couple of weeks so they still have time to find somebody to work those hours.

    I was recently scheduled for a job interview. I showed up on time, had nothing apparently offensive about my apperance, but was told that I would need to wait 15 minutes due to business. After 30 minutes, I was finally told I would 'be called back'. This has never happened to me before and I consider it highly unprofessional. What do you think?

I was called for a second interview, but as soon as I got there, as I was approaching the interviewer, she is like "you cannot do (a certain thing that caused them to drop me)..."       You already have a bad impression about the company because the way they treated you, so go with your gut feelings about working for them.

    • If you had personal contact with someone prior to the interview, you could politely call and ask about what happened. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps someone got sick or there was an emergency and "telephone style" that's the way the answer came to you.

      If you still get the run-around, consider yourself lucky you didn't get hired!

    • I personally would not take the job in this case because I agree, its unprofessional. But it also depends on how much you want the job, if its just a small job to pick up a little money then I would find somewhere else. There is always someone looking for work.

    • Well, it sounds like something unexpected came up in the office. We're all human, crap happens. Don't take it personally, I'm sure they will apologize when they call to reschedule.

        I had a job interview last week at the bank, I personally thought I did a good job on assessment but the interview I kind of worried about since there are too many applicants in one possition.
