Job Interview Questions: What to wear to job interview in biology lab?

I have an interview as a research associate (therefore entry level) in a biology lab. People at this company and in my city/region tend to dress extremely casually. As a woman, I don't exactly have a suit laying around and I'm pretty sure I'd look overeager and overdressed in one. Do you think gray slacks + white shirt + blue sweater + black flats would be appropriate or should I go drop $300 on a suit which I will never wear again??

If it's microbiology lab you can wear microbiology T or polo: www.cafepress.com/GeoChemBio/7681…

I remember that I didn't wear a suit for interview for the lab. I had slick pants, casual top and a jacket on. It works.

Get Hired Fast & Earn More - Top 5 Job Interview Tips

  • I don't care how casually they all dress for work--they're already hired. The way people who are already employed normally dress every day at work is irrelevant to how YOU should dress in going in for a job interview. You need to dress as nicely as you can, as conservatively as possible. You may feel you're overdressed, but for an interview you're not. Once you're hired it's a different story--as casual as everyone else, but right now, you're NOT like everyone else there, 'cause they're on the inside and you're not. From your description, it sounds like what you propose to wear is probably ok, but if you don't feel that what you have is good enough, then yes, you should drop some dough on nice dress or semi-dress clothes--it's an investment--you'll probably make all that money back with your first paycheck, and you can't predict with any certainty that you'll never wear them again, but if you want to get hired in the first place, you want every advantage you can get.

  • I've had many job interviews in the science field. Working in a lab you dress very casually because you are working with chemicals and samples that will just chew away and destroy your clothing. What you describe is exactly what I always wore to my interviews for jobs and graduate school, and I think it is definitely acceptable. No need to drop $300 on a suit. I've seen some people wearing dirty old converse and emo jeans, some people in full on suits and I've even seen someone wear a mini skirt with high heels, lol, but I think presenting yourself in slacks and a nice sweater with flats (no heels) will be a great first impression. You want to look sophisticated and smart, you don't want to look extremely laid back or like you are trying too hard to impresss.

BTW what is a research associate? Do you have a PHD? I have always seen people at the PHD level wearing suits for interviews or seminars, but never for lab tech or graduate student positions.

Job Interview Questions: If you are not offered a position during the interview, does it means you didn't get the job?

I went for a job interview today, the recruiter interviewed first, then sent me to see the supervisor for the job I am applying for. The supervisor asked a lot of general questions, mostly about what would you do in this or that situation, type of questions. He cell ran a couple of times, she stopped to browse the caller. I left and she did not say anything about if I was considered for the position. Is it true that if you are not offered a position during the interview, it means you did not get the job?

Interview Questions - Discover the Secrets of Answering Any Job Interview Question Easily

    • No necessarily. In my experience, no one has ever offered me a job right after the initial interview ended. Even when I was hiring people, I never offered them the job right away. There is usually a process that must be followed. Some companies even hold interviews that span days. When I went through my hiring process at work, I would set up the interviews, hold them, then submit the ones I liked to my supervisor. If she approved, she submitted them to the Corporations head office. Then if their background check cleared, I would be given the ok to call them and officially offer them the job. At the soonest we would know by the end of the business day, but only if everything was submitted early and everyone was in their office. Good luck to you!

Job Interview Questions: Have you ever had a job interview over the phone? What jobs allow this?

I will need to find a job in another state, but since I don't have a place to stay over there until I get a job, would a phone interview be possible for basic jobs?

8 Worst Job Interview Screw - Ups to Avoid

    Recommended Answer:
Some employers screen potential applicants over the phone, however this does not result in an applicant getting hired without a face to face interview. You cannot force an employer to give you a phone interview. Most employers want to see the applicant in person. Finding a job is going to be extremely difficult for you if you are not local and cannot attend a normal interview.

Job Interview - Best Prep Questions

    • Usually, the applicant pool is large enough for basic non-professional jobs that they don't do phone interviews. Phone interviews usually are used for "professional" or in-demand jobs where the employer is drawing from a much smaller applicant pool and wants to avoid having to pay someone to come interview.

    • Many places do first interviews over the phone.
It's a good way to decide if they actually want to deal with you in person. Here are some typical questions you would be asked during a phone interviews.
I'll give you some of the answers I have used in the past that always landed me those top tier positions.

Q-"At your last job, tell me some of the ways you stood out in comparison to colleagues"?

A-"During our morning meetings, we would each have to make a presentation about improving attitudes for the day. Rather than rambling corporate mumbo jumbo, I would stand up, and just start snoring as hard as I could with my eyes wide open."

Q-"Give me an example of going above and beyond for the customer."

A-"I am an advocate of direct eye contact. Direct eye contact while I dump my *** out and **** in the office trash can, begging them for pictures of their kids."

Q-"Finally, describe yourself in three words."

A-"I'm well spoken. I'm well organized, and I love the smell of a mans morning breath."Hopefully this points you in the right direction.

      Good luck!
