Job Interview Questions: How do I address my illness in a job interview?

I've been on disability for the last three years, but I have been well for quite some time. I have schizophrenia/bipolar. How do I tactfully address this issue with a future employer?

Which of These Job Interview Problems Would You Like to End?

Recommended Answer:
You don't. You are not obligated to inform them of any illness you have as long as it won;t interfere with your performance on the job.... get the job first... work long enough for them to accept you THEN maybe let them know about your issues..... if you tell them during an interview they will hire the other guy.... guarantee it.

Job Interview Tips - How to Showcase Your Talents Confidently

  • You don't.

When you apply for a job, an employer is not legally suppose to evaluate you based on illnesses or disease. What they will do is ask if you are able to do the job "with or without accommodation". What that means is if they hire you, what will they need to provide you with in order for you to successfully complete the responsibilities of the job. The accommodation may be anything from a flexible schedule, reduced hours, special chairs/desks/lighting or other equipment. The thing is that if you tell them you need something and the accommodation would cause the company significant financial or other burden, they don't have to provide it.

You are much better off not disclosing a disability unless you are legally required to. Cases where you might be legally required to disclose would include positions where security, safety or other sensitive types of work conditions would be present.

  • There is no way to do this, doesn't matter what the law is you will be disqualified.

  • You don't. It's no ones business what issues you have... period.
