I am having a job interview on Tuesday and I am figuring out to wear.This is for a UPS packaging and handling position and it just sounds like a very formal and strict environment.

I have always gotten away with dress shoes, nice dress pants or khakis, and a nice express polo. But these are the times when I applied for retail and a restaurant and got the job.

Should it be okay just wearing that, or would I have to wear a business like shirt, pants, shoes, tie, etc because it seems like a formal environment?

for my interview i wore smart trousers, shirt and blazer to make a good impression and they complimented me on my dress code.

  • This is such a standard question that you usually get at the end of an interview. It's very important to prepare beforehand. Research the company first, and come up with a list of questions. I would think that "when can I start?" would be a bit too direct; you haven't been offered the job yet. Before you get around to asking about all the things the company has to offer you (salary, benefits, etc.--and I've read that it's a bad idea to discuss benefits until after you've been offered the job, THEN decide if you will accept), come up with some questions that show genuine interest in the company and the position you're applying for. This is your opportunity to find out things you want to know, and demonstrate your genuine interest in the company.

  • Those are good questions and good suggestion listed here by answerers. However, their is nothing wrong in asking about the salary. Of course you want to know how much you are making before they offer you the job. Unless you don't mind starting at minimum wage or don't care about your salary. This is what I say, "Based on what is expected of me, what is my salary?"

  • ask about anything that may become an issue in the future. if it's a part-time job ask things like if you want to take a day off or get sick. expect the unexpected!

    You can search around for intervew tips and suggestions. Basically, from my experience, just remember, YOU are interviewing THEM as well. Get a feel for their personalities and work environment. Are there people there you could work well with or get along with? Is it dingy and unprofessional? Make SURE you find out who would be the boss of this particular position and get a feel for their personality. Ask what their managing style is like. Chemistry in a work place is VERY important. And just be yourself, try to relax, and just focus on understanding the questions, answering them the best you can and don't ramble on and on. Light humor and social converasation is good. Emphasize your strong points and eagerness to do well. They eat it up.

    OH, and if they ask how much you expect for a position like that, do NOT give a figure. If ANYTHING give a wide range, but what you should answer is "You expect a position such as that to be competitive compared to most companies with the same position, and for someone with your grades and eagerness, you know that a competitive, wonderful, field leader such as them will compensate fairly", something like that, and bring tissues to wipe the doo doo from your nose :) hehe

      Hey I had a group interview at a GAP outlet store - it sells women's, men's and kids clothes.
      There was about 17 of us and we all had to go and grab something in store that we thought was like our personality and then explain why we chose the item to the group. Then we got given a different card each with a scenario on it (mine was 23 year old girl meeting boyfriends parents for first time, size 12, budget £100.) and had to go round the shop and pick what you thought would be the perfect outfit and then explain why. After this we got into groups which were divided into 'shop floor' 'tills' and 'fitting rooms' and each group had to do a spider diagram of the role and duties of the shop assistant at each area. After which half the group were sent home. The rest of us stayed and went round the shop with an evaluation form saying what was good and bad about the shop ie stock levels, tidiness, shop displays etc.
      Then we were just asked our availability and they took our contact numbers.
      The next day I was offered the job yay :) :) :)
      If you have a group interview the main thing is to stand out from the croud. Be the first to put your hand up to go first. Speak out but don't interrupt other people. Smile and make chit chat with members of staff who already work there. And just be confident even if you dont feel it!

      I'd say either wear black pants and a nice top, or a skirt with tights or a dress with tights. Don't be afraid to add a little colour. For my interview I wore a black jumper tucked into a highwaisted black skirt but added a big bright pink waist belt and purple shoes :)

      If its a one to one interview Im pretty sure they'll ask questions such as:

      Why do you want to work for GAP?
      Tell us about a time you worked in a team.
      What can you bring to our company?
      Tell me about yourself.

      Be sure to ask any questions at the end but I'd steer clear from asking things like rates of pay and hours...if you get the job you can find out then. Maybe ask what the working environment is like.
      It may help if you do a little research about the company before hand too.
