It probably depends on what technology area you are focused on but you may want to focus on creativity rather than just technical strength. In general (using broad generalizations), straight A students are not the most creative. They may work the hardest or be good at studying and learning facts at least long enough to do well on tests but this is not a measure of creative thinking. You certainly want employees who are passionate about the subject/technology/etc. There are psychology tests that aim to measure creativity and there common traits shared by many creative people but I don't think there is any one method for identifying who will be a successful inventor.

    "if you own a machine and the manufacturer is out of business, how do you get it fixed?"
    The answer would show how "inventive" they can be.
