Job Interview Questions: How do YOU dress for a job interview?

I don't have like a business suit or anything so I'm wearing a black button up shirt, gray slacks, and black flats. Also, how do you do your make up? I'm going to do just some basic eye liner, and nude color eye shadow. Nothing too bold.

Job Interview Tips for Second Interviews

Recommended Answer:
I've always worn a suit to the first interview, and a pencil skirt with a button down shirt to the second (if there was a second). Good luck girl!!

Be Prepared For Job Interview Success

  • The general rule of thumb is to wear one "step up" in dress from what a person in the position would typically wear or what the dress code is. Another good tip is to dress to match the boss / interviewer.

I always wore a suit for interviews. I also generally wear heels because I'm comfortable in them. I would absolutely recommend wearing flats if that is where your comfort level lies (or if the job is something that's going to have you running around - caring for children, etc.)

If you don't have an actual suit, do you have a blazer or suit jacket that you could pair with some slacks or a (knee-length) skirt?

The sound of your outfit is nice, but I would add some color somewhere. You want them to see you right away and remember you. It may not be fair, but your outfit is the first thing they're going to judge and a smartly worn eye-catching piece will work wonders. Either a bright scarf or bold jewelry maybe? (I wouldn't recommend a 'loud' purse or bag as you don't want to be carrying anything big with you.)

  • Black and grey is always good. I also be sure I fix my hair (it's naturally curly so I straighten it). To me it just looks more professional and I hate my hair curly. If I do curl it, I don't air dry it, I actually pull out the curling iron and fix it properly. For makeup I do a very neutral look: nude eye shadow or a champagne color (adds light to the eyes), a light amount of eye liner, and mascara. Small amount of blush, and nude lips (say chapstick or a neutral lip color). Fixing your hair and being sure your nails are neat and trim will show the interviewer that you care for your personal hygiene, which reflects positively to your work ethic.

I think what you described will be just fine. If it's a company that would more likely being in suits, I would try to find a blazer or at least a nice looking scarf to dress it up a bit.

  • I dress as close to the way I would be dressing for the job I'm applying for. When I was applying for a grocery store, I wore black slacks, black socks and tennis shoes, and a white button-up shirt. When I applied for an office job, I wore black slacks, a nice shirt, nylons and low heals.

I don't usually wear makeup, and as a result, I'm not very confident when it comes to applying the right colors and applying it properly. If I felt the need to put on make up, I'd put on as little as possible and follow the "less is more" rule...I'd want it to look like I wasn't wearing ANY makeup. Especially if it's an office job; I wouldn't go for the bold look.

  • It honestly depends on what job. What you said your wearing sounds great just don't overdress. Just say this.. if your interviewing at say walmart or other basic store you don't want to go wearing a nice suit, hair and makeup all done up nice and jewelry from Tiffany's if you get what i mean. A nice pair of dress pants with a casual not too dressy shirt looks great. It looks like your hiding something and they don't like that. Managers like to find people who will be open, and be themselves. However if it's a higher job like management or other position you should dress nice because it shows your professionalism. Most managers however should see past your clothing and into your personality. As long as you seem like a potentially good employee thats all that matters Dressing nice just shows your comitment and of course your preofessionalism. Thats why it's bad to show up in jeans and things like that - to me it looks like it was just another errand in your day.
Do your hair and make-up the same way you always do it. You don't want to have a completely different appearance at the interview then you do when you get the job. If you wear very bold makeup then tone it down for the workplace in general.

When I go for interviews I usually follow these standards. I got an interview at shopko for a cashier and I wore khaki pants with dress shoes, and a sweater or casual shirt I cant remember. When I interviewed at one of the hospitals for a medical records position I dressed up a little bit more. I work nice black dress pants, black heels a button up shirt with a jacket. Not too dressy but dressy enough. I got both jobs so I think the standards are pretty well met.

    Good luck :)

  • I wear slacks, button down shirt and a cardigan. I apply a small amount of makeup. I don't want to over do it. I have been in interviews where others are waiting in jeans and graphic t-shirts. I have done interviews where girls dress like they are going to a club, while I am not a man that doesn't impress me. The only thing that impresses me is how well you sell yourself, if you look like you have a good work ethic, good attitude, and dress presentable.

  • It's been a few years since I've been to one, but I work slacks and a nice shirt. I too wore flats, as I don't like heels and they seemed a bit too fancy for the job I was interviewing for. ;-) I'm not a huge make up wearer. Usually just a bit of basic black eye liner, a light eyeshadow and the occasional small bit of mascara. Other then that, that's usually it.

  • It's been a while since I had an interview but in general, I would wear khakis and a nice shirt with dress shoes. My last job was at a daycare and I knew I'd be wearing jeans and a tee shirt everyday but still dressed for an interview. My boss even said I could have wore jeans to the interview but I can't do that lol.

  • What you have sounds fine. I have a black interview/funeral suit, and a few different color shirts as part of my professional wardrobe. I wear white or blue to a first interview, and if it went well, I go with something bolder for a follow-up, like a bright pink or a lime green.

  • Black slacks, a cute dressy top (but nothing too bright / busy) and black flats. Id do my make up just like I do any other day.. foundation, powder, eye shadow to match the outfit but not 'clubbish' or 'night out-ish', eye liner, mascara and lip gloss. :-)

  • I have two suits, but I also have a lot of other professional looking clothes. I have a certain power outfit that I always go to for lots of confidence. I do my makeup with nude shades and mascara. I don't want to look like a harlot haha.

  • My 1st three interviews were extremely informal- a summer camp and 2 fast food joints.

I didn't have an interview for my current job- my stepmom just hired me. That sounds like a good outfit though. The only thing I'd do different for make up is mascara

  • That sounds good. I wear slacks and a nice shirt. Usually I try to keep the color toned down, I would hate to draw attention away from my awesome beauty and stunning personality.

Be careful with that eye liner.

  • Black dress pants a nice dressy shirt or one that looks professional. For my last job I wore black dress pants, a long sleeved pink shirt with sequins on the neck line, and black high heels and a little mascara. Beyond easy.

  • Sounds good but, you may want to add bit of color like a blue, red, or whatever color looks good on you for the shirt? Like a plain button down shirt not a print. Good Luck!!!

  • Black skirt (knee length), nylons, white dressy t-shirt, grey cardigan, necklace and earrings. Black flats. I wear minimal make-up.

  • It depends on the job you're interviewing for.

  • i almost always wore jeans and a clean shirt, always got the job too :)

  • depends ur job type and moreover light makeup is always better with normal jeans and t-shirt..

Job Interview Questions: What's the best answer to give in a job interview?

When asked, "what is your best quality and what is your worst?" What should I say? I don't want to make myself look bad.

Job Interview Tips For You-Five Tips To Instantly Increase Your Success Rate

Recommended Answer:
Hi Rose,

I just read an article about this! Avoid the standard "I'm too committed to my work" answer. Interviewers can see right through that. They expect you to be human, so give a human answer.

For your worst attribute, be human. Give a real answer. Explain what you're doing to overcome the problem.

For your best attribute, explain what others think are your best attribute. Maybe pick something from a performance review. Explain how you used this best attribute to accomplish something for the team.

It's a trick question. If you try not to look bad, you'll look bad. You have to look a little bad, but explain what you're doing to overcome it and you'll look better.

Good luck with the interview.

5 Top Tips For Preparing For a Job Interview

    • Years ago (20) when I was much younger and attractive, a recruiter once suggested I attach a photo of myself to my resume. The reason was that most employers will hire someone that is attractive vs someone that isn't. Of course that was the time when we actually mailed in resumes vs now using the internet.

Most employers out there will either like/dismiss you immediately when they meet you. You know the saying you only have 1 chance to impress. That is why they always tell you to dress for success since you want to make that 1st impression.

      good luck

I'm in high school and I have a job interview this Friday at a Tim Horton's........I've never had a job before so this will be my first interview and I have no idea what to expect. Does anyone have any advice? Any tips to follow on what to say or what to wear etc would be appreciated. Thanks! :)

Are You Making These Common Job Interview Mistakes?

    Recommended Answer:
I'd say you should wear something professional that would also make you feel confident. Always dress for the job you want (even though it's just a part-time type of job). I would suggest wearing some dress slacks w/ a white button up shirt. Always try to cover tattoos or other things like that. Make sure that you're clean & your hair's brushed, your nails aren't chipped, etc.

You should also smile a lot and try to be personable w/ the interviewer. They'll most likely ask why you applied there, you can say something like I'm a customer here and I've always really liked it, so I thought I'd apply. Try & be flexible as well.

Even if you had the best intententions how can you expect them to think you are going to show up to work prepared if you can't take five minutes out of your day to pick a few bullet points about the company?

With so many people out of work right now, you need to set yourself apart from the rest; not self yourself back.

Job Interview - Top Tips When Preparing for a Job Interview

    • That really depends on the company and the job. If you're at McDonalds or Walmart, they probably don't care, and are just looking for warm bodies. At a small business of some sort, they probably don't care because they're small, and they're just looking to gauge what you do know. The only time I'd be worried about that sort of thing is at a medium sized company who are looking for passionate people to expand the brand. I don't think this answer really hurt you in the long run.

    • Always, always, go to an interview fully prepared which means you should care enough to do a little research. You probably blew the interview but you can learn from your mistake.

See if you can find out what sort of question you failed.

The Cafe, a Cup of Coffee and a Job Interview - A Dangerous Brew

    • How about trying to do a follow up? Make a phone call after about 5 days and be sure to let him or her know of your continued interest in the job. This is also a good opportunity to ask if he or she needs anything or a clarification from you. If not available, leave a message so that they will know you tried to contact them. Just try it, they might reconsider.

    • So why didn't you get the gig? If your résumé is killer and your references rave about you, it could be that you sabotaged yourself in one of these all-too-common ways.1. EAU NO,YOU STANK UP THE ROOM!
Hold the spritzes of Viva La Juicy for barhopping this weekend. In addition to stinking up an office, layering on the perfume shows you're not business-savvy, according to executive coach Marc Dorio, author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Perfect Job Interview. “Everything should be in moderation,” he cautions. "To an employer, going over the top with perfume isn't just unappealing; it also could be interpreted as your being frivolous.” Not to mention clueless about the effects your product choices have on other people. Some companies even have fragrance-free policies, and your potent signature scent could really give them something to sneeze at.

      2. YOU CAME. YOU SAW. YOU TWEETED
The interview went so well that you just couldn't wait to spread the news to make your friends jealous. Well, you may have just tweeted yourself out of a job. Sharing deets — good or bad — about your job hunt with, oh, the entire world shows an employer that you don't know the first thing about discretion. And don't think for a second that they won't scope you out online. "Hiring managers tell me it's all but certain that they'll Google a prospective candidate,” says Paul Powers, Ph.D., author of Winning Job Interviews. That means your Facebook and Twitter pages are fair game. His advice: Stay mum on the job opportunity — online as well as with others in your industry — until you're officially told you are hired.

      3. YOU GOT WAY TOO BUDDY-BUDDY
The person interviewing you was fun and laidback and — based on her Bbebe slingbacks — clearly loves the same brands you do. So you let down your guard and started dropping whatevs and Ii know, right? the way you would with any co-worker. Bbig no-no. Iit can be tough to gauge how to react when a potential boss is supercasual, but acting informally during an interview should never go both ways, says Lorne Epstein, CEOo of IinSide Jjob and author of You're Hired! Chumminess aside, she wants to know you can handle yourself in any professional situation...Nno matter how many F bombs she lets fly or happy-hour stories she tells, continue to show her the same respect you would a college dean or any other authority figure who can make or break your future.

      4. YOU FORGOT TO COME UP FOR AIR
"Some candidates have so much to share that they don't pay attention to what the interviewer needs,” says Dorio. "I may say to myself, Is this person even listening to me? It makes me think that they wouldn't be a good listener on the job or that they might be too wrapped up in themselves.” Instead of yapping away, ask smart, focussed questions to prove that you're listening, and keep an ear out for key phrases about what exactly they're looking for. Then use those same phrases to describe yourself.

      5. YOU REFERRED TO YOUR EX-BOSS AS THE TERMINATOR
Your previous employer tore people apart like Tyra on Top Model, but for all you know, you could be talking to her evil twin or beloved former colleague. So when asked why you want to move on, skip the urge to trash-talk, and focus on why you're perfect for this job. It'll show that you won't badmouth your new boss or the company behind her back and that you can work well with others, says Powers. "The employer is also assessing your character,” he points out. "If you say 'My boss was an idiot,' you come across as immature.” And if there's one thing no workplace needs more of, it's drama.

Job Interview Questions: What to wear to a job interview?

I have a job interview tomorrow at a recreational center. I've volunteered there before so I know the guy looking to hire me. Normally the work consists of helping the rock climb wall, work scoreboards, and supervise the gym floor. Easy job for $8.50 an hour.
What i'd usually wear would be khaki shorts and a rec center shirt.

What should I wear to the interview??? I'm so lost and don't know where to begin. I don't know what would be TOO formal or too casual. Any help?

    Seven Job Interview Preparation Secrets

    • Even though your dress code while you would be working is more on the casual side, as with any interview you want to "dress to impress." I would suggest wearing at LEAST button up shirt, a tie, and dress pants/khakis. I think in this instance, a full suit would be overkill.

    • Clean pressed slacks, button shirt (also clean and pressed), real shoes (not sneakers or sandals)

    • nice dark-wash jeans and a button down cotton shirt. it looks professional and clean but not too dressy

    • Good smart jeans with a shirt and not trainers! decent smart shoes

Job Interview Questions: Can someone give me some good job interview tips?

I have a job interview friday to work as a cashier at panda express.. and im kinda shy and not that outgoing.. and i was hopeing i could get some good tips on things i could say so that i could get the job... thankx in advance!:)

Things to Do in a Job Interview

    Recommended Answer:
Well... in this type of position you have to be out going and not shy of speaking up or over a mic...some places do that. If you want the job you have to show an interest of what you are applying for and in this case a cashier needs to know basic communication skills dealing with people that have different attitudes, and knowing you are there to help make things run smoothly. I would suggest when you talk to the person conducting the interview limit your answers to short but concise responses, and try not to use the word (um) in between your words. Keep eye contact, and strongly imply that you are willing to learn and develop more within in the company, and you like the thought of something challenging. My advice is simply be calm, and speak clearly do not put a lot of words in one sentence. Breathe in between thoughts. Well I hope you get the job, and all goes well. Oh! remember the interviewer wants to know you are there for the job not just for the money though you may be that is not the way to get the job. Good Luck!!

The 5 Biggest Mistakes People Make in Job Interviews - And How You Can Avoid Them!

    • Become less shy and more outgoing. If you're a cashier you're going to be dealing with people all day and will need to be vocal and friendly.

    • You should in fact practice smiling in the mirror. Google "typical job interview questions" Basic questions may include: Why do you feel you can do this job? Where do you want to be five years from now? Why do you feel that you can do this job? What was the last book you read?

If you have piercing other than earrings --- take them out. If you have tattoos --- cover them up.

Have you heard of Sam E? It's over the counter mood relaxer. Might be what you need before an interview.

    • I am really shy too but think of it as IF I really want this job then I will have to be outgoing or you will never get it
