Appearing For a Dream Job Interview - Things That You Must Not Talk About

Yes--it's a good idea to call them, but only call them one more time. I recommend you try and find out the name of the editor you would report to. Call this editor direct instead of calling the Human Resources department. One way to find out who the editors are is join Linked In. This free site is like FaceBook for professionals. See the link below.
One feature of Linked In is you can look up a company by name. They will then list the names of several key employees. This will make it easier for you to get through to the right person with minimal risk of being screened out.
Another site you can try is Hoovers. This is a huge directory of companies, but they also list several of there top leaders and managers. Hoovers allows some free searches--usually large Fortune 500 companies--but they might charge a fee for other searches. You decide if it is worth it for you, but Hoovers is very good and provides a lot of useful information about companies including a comparison of their competitors and recent press releases--pro and con.
If you can't find the name of the editor, just call into the company and ask if you can speak to one of the editors. Tell the receptionist you are a student at UM and you need a moment of their advice. I guarantee they will put you right through to an editor. Editors are busy people, so you will probably get voice mail. Go ahead and leave the following email: "Hello...my name is so-and-so and I'm a student at UM majoring in English. I am at the top of my class and very excited about a publishing career. I am very impressed with your company and need a moment of your advice as to the best way to approach your company for an interview. I would really appreciate it if you would call me at your earliest convenience. My cell number is 555-1212." Make sure you're available to pick up when they call.
Most editors will call you back as they were a student at one time and they will likely want to help you. Once you get them on the phone you should try and get a lot of information about the hiring process. It's possible this editor is the one with the opening. If not, they might know the editor well and be willing to tell you their name and direct phone number.
This is about the best you can do. If for some reason you don't hear back from an editor, just collapse and call for the HR Manager. Maybe they didn't get your resume.
It's very important that you have a professional looking resume that does a good job of outlining your strengths in a way that makes you stand out from other candidates. If you're not getting call backs from companies, your resume may be lacking and might need a face lift. I've provided a link to a website that has an excellent free resume example.
Hope this helps get you in the door. All the best with your writing career.
