Job Interviewing Preparation: The Winning Approach!

First, congratulations on landing the interview! In today's market, that's not always an easy thing to do. You have all the materials you need, however, consider them more like a portfolio. Anything you've done that is relevant to the position you are interviewing for should be included. The most important thing to do is prepare yourself. Find a friend or family member and mock interview so that you can practice your answers. There are a lot of places online you will find potential interview questions. Next, make sure you have 2-3 questions of your own and plan on asking them during the interview. Do your homework and read about the company. Find things to ask about that let them know you have done research and are taking the position seriously. The site below will also give you more information on interview tips.

Job Interviews - How to Quickly and Easily Succeed at Them

  • If they need the transcript, they would ask for it. I think it is overkill and a waste of paper. They'd also insist on it being in a sealed envelope from the registrar and they would probably request it themselves. Usually they would only care if you have a degree. I'd arrive ten minutes before the interview and I would bring a pen and the other two items you mentioned.

I'd also make sure to dress professionally and not go in even in business casual if you can help it. Business casual is the bare minimum if you don't own a suit. At least wear a tie. Make sure to wear good shoes and your hair looks nice. Don't forget deodorant. Take out any piercings you have on before you get there.

  • You probably don't need the college transcript--I've never been asked to provide one for an entry-level job--but you can bring all of your documents in a professional-looking leather portfolio, and if your interviewer expresses any interest in seeing proof of your credit hours, you can pull it and show him. If he doesn't say anything, just leave it in there.

If you haven't filled out an official job application with the company, bring the addresses and phone numbers of all your previous jobs (for filling out the job history section--I surely don't remember all the details of my previous jobs that well), and bring a few copies of your references sheet with the names and contact info for at least three references.

You can walk in about 10 minutes early and let someone know that you are there to see so-and-so, but that you know you're early, so there's no rush. You'll probably be directed somewhere to wait for your interviewer.

Look up a list of commonly asked interview questions (Google it) and already have answers prepared for those questions.

  • Myself I believe that letters are great, providing they are composed utilizing great punctuation and spelling (always use a spall chocker!). You can get some great guidance for composing letters by visiting the resource in the box below, it's got a lot of other stuff about job hunting in addition.

  • Good luck with your interview. Even if your nervous try and appear to be confident. Not TOO over confident though. Just that you believe in yourself and know what your doing.
Make sure you show charisma and when they ask the question
'why should we employ you' say because you have ambition. Let them know that you believe in yourself and their company!
    How could they say no!
    Best of luck

  • I'll tell you what NOT to bring: your cell phone. (Or leave it in the car. Turn it off, at the very least.)

Sure way to blow an interview is to have your cell phone ring during the interview. Even worse if you answer it.

  • A fresh copy of your resume. Dress business casual, bring a pen, and arrive 10 to 15 minutes early
