Job Interview Questions: When at a job interview in North Carolina, what all can an employer ask about a background check?

I am trying to find a job in North Carolina, I do have a criminal record (two misdemeanors), and I just wanted to know how much detail/information can an employer ask about it?

  • Employers can generally ask about convictions or pending cases, but not expunged/sealed records. I'm not sure the exact law within North Carolina, but it is within their right to ask about felonies or misdemeanors.

If they approach you and ask about the details of your misdemeanors, it means they're willing to engage in discussion and that you aren't necessarily disqualified from the job.

  • Very risky to lie on an application. Companies routinely do background checks, especially bigger companies, so they will find it. The lying is always considered a serious offense, even more than the misdemeanors, so fess up if you want to get hired.

  • Don't worry about how much detail they want to ask as long as you won't be lying. Lying would be a serious offense you are going to face.

  • They will do a background check which will show all of your convictions.
