Job Interview Questions: Is it better to reschedule a job interview or be late to a job interview?

Well I was going to be late today for a job interview so I reschedule it for another day.

I was wondering if this was better then being late? and will this hurt my chances of getting this job?

Great Tips for a Successful Job Interview

Recommended Answer:
If you know you're going to be more that 10 minutes late, then reschedule. But, keep in mind rescheduling can hurt your chances; because, the interviewer can think of you as a person who probably calls-in a lot and deem you as undependable.

Job Interview Tips - How to Showcase Your Talents Confidently

  • Rescheduling is better but make sure you do it the right way.

Call immediately if you know you need to reschedule job interview, preferably before the day of your interview - it is inappropriate and inconsiderate to call on the day itself.
Speak directly to your interviewer. Most of the time, employers inform you of the person who will talk to you in the interview. Answering machines or leaving messages are a no-no - they're not only unprofessional, but you risk not having them delivered and keep people waiting.
Apologize and be polite when on the phone with the interviewer, and explain why to reschedule job interview.
Request to reschedule your interview on a date that you sure you can be present, and if the interviewer agrees to it. Once a date is set, always thank the interviewer sincerely for giving you another shot at getting the job.
Once you have a reschedule job interview, show your appreciation to your prospective employer by calling in to confirm that you will be up and about during the interview. This helps diminish thoughts of insincerity and unreliability from you.

On the day of your rescheduled interview, be sure to apologize again and show all ways of courtesy.

  • Call to reschedule...they'll respect you for that. But give them a really good reason for why you need to reschedule.

You could call them today and say that something VERY important has come up (keep the reason brief but solid) and ask if they can do the interview later today or another day in the week.

(if you turn up late to an interview without calling they'll think you're irresponsible and a bad timekeeper.......... )
